Lack of data means it can be difficult to assess how a mine is impacting the surrounding community. A new report from Dalhousie University shows flaws in the environmental review process for mining operations in Canada, with researchers finding that data for 20 per cent of the projects they reviewed was incomplete or missing entirely from public records. The report collected all available environmental impact assessments on mining projects dating back to 1974 — that’s 266 assessments on 227 projects over 50 years. However, researchers ran into problems. Some provinces, such as British Columbia, had a fully digitized and accessible…

US rare earths company MP Materials said on Thursday its third-quarter loss widened as it stopped sales to Chinese customers as part of an agreement with the US government, although the results surpassed Wall Street expectations. Shares fell 7.4% to $48.40 in after-hours trading. The results reflect the company’s transition from dependence on foreign sales to a focus on being a major US miner and processor of rare earths and manufacturer of the magnets made from them that are used widely across the automotive, electronics and defense industries. MP owns the only US rare earths mine and is developing a magnet facility in…
The global titanium alloys market is set to experience robust growth over the next decade, driven by rising demand from aerospace, automotive, and medical sectors. According to Fact.MR, the market is valued at USD 7.9 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 14.8 billion by 2035, expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.5%. South Korea said on Tuesday it plans to restructure the domestic steel industry after the sector has been buffeted by higher tariffs imposed by the United States and the European Union as well as oversupply issues, according to the industry ministry. The ministry said in a statement the government planned to take preemptive steps to adjust production capacity in oversupplied products, as well as expand financial and policy support for exporters facing steel tariffs. https://www.mining.com/web/south-korea-to-restructure-steel-industry-hit-by-tariffs-oversupply/
Results confirm fault-linked mineralization, support expanded modeling. Klondike Gold Corp. Nov. 6 reported results from the first phase of its 2025 drill program at the Klondike District Gold Project in Yukon, where structural testing across 13 holes confirmed key fault orientations and delivered a new zone of gold mineralization. “These results are highly encouraging,” said Klondike Gold President and CEO Peter Tallman. Launching the first phase of its multi-stage 2025 drill program in late April, Klondike Gold focused on tracing the deeper and wider extents of gold-bearing structures within the Eldorado Fault Corridor, a major deformation zone that cuts across…
Mining industry leaders are excited about getting projects off the shelves and into development under the second Trump administration. Beyond taking advantage of a favorable federal regulatory climate, they’re looking for ways to make responsible mining happen more easily regardless of which party is in control. American Exploration and Mining Association (AEMA) Executive Director Mark Compton told the annual conference in Anchorage of the Alaska Miners Association that he believes bipartisan support exists within Washington DC to make that happen—maybe. Making Reform Stick “There is clearly a sincere desire in a bipartisan way in Congress to accomplish permanent reform legislatively.…
A conservative presidential hopeful in Peru is vowing a major change in policy representing the key mining industry’s biggest fear: to revoke key exploration permits for idle projects and redistribute them. The proposal is the bane of global mining corporations that operate in Peru since they increasingly battle for control of mineral-rich territory with informal actors. Companies condemn them as illegal miners, while small-scale diggers accuse them of hoarding land for decades without exploiting it. “Idle areas will revert to the state if they are not used by the formal mining industry,” said Rafael Lopez Aliaga, a former mayor of…
Fund money has surged into the London Metal Exchange (LME) aluminium contract over the past couple of months as investors bet that the market’s days of chronic oversupply are coming to an end. Investors have built up record long positions, fuelling a six-month rally that has seen the LME three-month metal trade this week above the $2,900 per metric ton level for the first time since May 2022. The speculative inflows speak to a change of narrative in the aluminium market With production in China, the world’s largest producer, now running up against the government’s capacity cap, there is growing…
By working together, the Western Hemisphere can increase its economic independence and resilience. The United States has a narrow window to reshape its economic future and its role in the Americas if it moves decisively. A network of special economic zones could secure critical minerals supply chains, compete with China, and catalyze growth across the Western Hemisphere. Designed with enforceable standards, it would demonstrate that the Americas can deliver long-term growth and security. The Critical Minerals Challenge and Opportunity Critical minerals are at the heart of technological dynamism and national security, powering everything from chips to grid-scale storage to defense platforms. Yet, most mines…
The Trump administration on Thursday added 10 minerals to a list it deems essential for the U.S. economy and national security, including copper, vital to electric vehicles, power grids, and data centers, and metallurgical coal, used to make coke fuel for steel production. The Interior Department’s critical minerals list guides federal investments and permitting decisions and helps shape the government’s broader minerals strategy. The administration is expanding the list amid efforts to boost domestic mining and cut reliance on imports, particularly from economic rival China. LIST GUIDES FEDERAL INCENTIVES The list serves as a blueprint for Washington’s push to secure…
