The Punta Gorda City Council is set to adopt a resolution opposing phosphate mining within the city limits, citing concerns about its potential impact on water resources, the environment, nearby properties, and public infrastructure.
City leaders said mining could disturb large areas of land and potentially affect local water resources, the environment, and the character of Punta Gorda.
The resolution does not ban phosphate mining outright or automatically stop any proposed projects. Instead, it puts the city’s opposition on record and asks other government agencies to consider this position when reviewing future mining proposals.
The resolution states that phosphate mining may involve substantial land disturbance and activities that warrant careful consideration of their effects on water resources, neighboring properties, public infrastructure, and the city’s character.
It directs the city clerk to transmit the resolution to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Southwest Florida Water Management District, the Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners, and the city’s state legislative delegation.
The resolution will take effect immediately upon its adoption.
