Mexico’s mining sector is poised for a significant capital expenditure rebound, with total industry investment projected to reach US$6.4 billion. According to data reported by the Mexican Mining Chamber (CAMIMEX), this figure represents a 30.8% increase compared to the US$4.896 billion invested during the previous year.

The projected upswing follows a 2025 investment cycle that totaled US$4.896 billion, falling short of initial projections of US$5.31 billion. Major operators across the country — including Grupo México, Industrias Peñoles, Fresnillo, Torex Gold, First Majestic Silver, Agnico Eagle, and Alamos Gold — are accelerating capital allocation to maintain operations and advance strategic development pipelines.

Capital deployment for the year is led by maintenance spending, which is forecasted at US$1.113 billion. Project expansions form the second-largest expenditure category at US$976 million, followed by equipment purchases totaling US$835 million and dedicated environmental actions valued at US$735 million. These investments reflect a concerted industry-wide effort to sustain production levels across mature assets while adapting to robust long-term global demand for minerals critical to industrial manufacturing, infrastructure expansion, and the ongoing energy transition.

This recovery is heavily underpinned by progress in addressing administrative hurdles. The progressive clearance of permitting backlogs at federal agencies such as SEMARNAT and CONAGUA is crucial for unlocking multi-billion-dollar project pipelines across the country. Fernando Aboitiz, Head of Extractive Activities Coordination, Ministry of Economy, noted that resolving these bottlenecks supports government goals to return national mineral output toward its historic peak of 42Mt from approximately 32Mt. Minister of Economy Marcelo Ebrard has similarly emphasized that securing mineral supply chains is a top national priority, recognizing precious and base metals as essential manufacturing inputs rather than solely revenue sources.

Furthermore, the sector holds long-term potential to attract up to US$43 billion in new investment and create 500,000 jobs over six years under enhanced regulatory certainty and fiscal competitiveness. CAMIMEX continues to champion public-private collaboration, aligning industry capabilities with Plan México and the US–Mexico Critical Minerals Action Plan to reinforce Mexico’s position as a vital supplier of North American critical minerals.
