    Epiroc deploys dozers for remediation

Accelerating mine remediation work in Northern Canada, RCT – Powered by Epiroc reported that its AutoNav Lite semi-automation system has been rapidly deployed on two Caterpillar D10 dozers to support stabilization work in controlled areas of a remediation project at a gold mine in northern Canada.

Founded in Stockholm in 1873, Sweden-based Epiroc is a mining equipment and technology company that has expanded from supplying machinery for mining and infrastructure into digital systems for rock excavation, mine automation, electrification, and machine control that can move operators away from hazardous work areas.

Expanding that automation business in 2022, Epiroc acquired Australia-based Remote Control Technologies Pty Ltd., or RCT, a mining automation company whose systems are capable of being installed on single machines or mixed fleets across different equipment types and manufacturers.

Among the systems in RCT’s automation portfolio was AutoNav Lite, a semi-automation platform designed to let operators manage machines remotely rather than from inside the cab by shifting control to dedicated automation centers.

Using that technology now for remediation work, Epiroc announced that AutoNav Lite had been installed and commissioned on two Caterpillar D10 dozers at a major gold mining operation in Northern Canada.

From approval through commissioning, the deployment was completed on an accelerated schedule, with the automation equipment manufactured, assembled, and shipped from RCT facilities in Brisbane and Perth before being transported to Canada for installation.

“This was significantly faster than the typical build and deployment cycle for comparable automation solutions,” said RCT Global Operations Manager Rick Radcliffe.

While Epiroc did not identify the operation where this technology was deployed, the location, timing, and described use of remote-operated dozers closely align with remediation work at the Eagle Gold Mine in Yukon, where the territorial government reported last September that PricewaterhouseCoopers Inc. was using remote-controlled bulldozers to recontour the heap to improve stability and reduce the risk of another slide.

Operated from dual AutoNav Centres established on site, the two D10 dozers are now being handled remotely within the operation rather than from inside the cab.

By removing operators from potential danger while allowing work to continue inside controlled areas, the AutoNav Lite deployment is expected to support both safer ground management and higher site productivity during remediation.

“The project highlights how the team can work together to meet urgent operational requirements at short notice,” Radcliffe said.
